Book Editor

To edit precisely is a form of praise; it means the editor is inside the story with you, rooting for it just like you are, but also really in touch with its strengths and weaknesses.

George Saunders, Art of Fiction No. 245, Paris Review

I’ve been an independent book editor since 2006, and I’ve worked as an associate editor with Indigo Editing, Design, and More since 2012. I specialize in historical fiction and sci-fi/fantasy as well as narrative nonfiction. I also edit fiction and nonfiction books in translation to English. I’m happiest with a long list of facts checked, and I am not afraid to edit ? or even build, if I have the sources from the author ? a bibliography. For works in translation, particularly nonfiction, I can localize references for an American or Canadian audience.

There are two easy ways to find me for a sample edit and estimate of costs for a project. The first is to contact me through Indigo. You can also send a note with your name, genre, word count, and quick overview of your project to khg at kristenhallgeisler dot com.

I’ve made a whole special page with loads of information about what it’s like to work with me as an editor.

Editorial Evaluation

Sometimes you know your project isn’t ready for a book editor, but you don’t know how to fix its problems ? or even what the problems might be. In that case, I can do an editorial evaluation. I’ll read the book as it is and give you thorough, actionable feedback, then coach you through your revisions. Check out the editorial evaluation rate sheet for more info.
