To edit precisely is a form of praise; it means the editor is inside the story with you, rooting for it just like you are, but also really in touch with its strengths and weaknesses.

I’ve been an independent book editor since 2006 specializing in historical fiction and sci-fi/fantasy as well as narrative nonfiction. I’ve I also edit fiction and nonfiction books in translation to English, and I’ve worked with many authors who come from academic backgrounds. I’m happiest with a long list of facts checked, and I am happy to edit—or even build, if I have the sources from the author—a bibliography. For works in translation, particularly nonfiction, I can localize references for an American or Canadian audience.

I provide a free sample edit of about five pages for all clients. This helps me learn your style and assess the manuscript, and it allows you to see if my editing style is a good fit for you. Start the process by using the contact form above or email me at khg at kristenhallgeisler dot com. I also work as an associate editor with Indigo Editing, Design, and More, which is handy if you’re looking for more services than just an editor.

Editorial Evaluation

Sometimes you know your project isn’t ready for a book editor, but you don’t know how to fix its problems or even what the problems might be. In that case, I can do an editorial evaluation. I’ll read the book as it is and give you thorough, actionable feedback, then coach you through your revisions. Check out the editorial evaluation rate sheet for more info.

If you’re not sure what kind of editing to even ask for, take my 10-question editing quiz to help decide what kind of editing will work best no matter what stage your manuscript is
