I’ll be in Snoqualmie, Washington, this coming weekend for the Red Bull Global Rallycross event September 26-27, 2014. It’s being held at Dirtfish Rally School, which is one of my favorite places to visit. If you want to come up and visit me — and Bucky Lasek, and Sverre Isachsen, and Ken Block, and Tanner Foust, but mostly me — please do! I’ll be the one with the notebook in my hand. I’m pretty sure none of the drivers will have that distinctive feature.

If you, like me, take your breaks with a cup of coffee and Jezebel, you might have seen this brief post about race car driver Katherine Legge having the first all-female crew with her at the 2012 Indy 500. I was stoked! But I was also skeptical. Where were these ladies at the previous race? What pit crew is usually using a gas woman instead of a gas man? Or were there unemployed techs and mechanics just waiting in the wings for their turn?
None of the above, it happens. According to Legge’s PR guy, all the other female drivers who drive for TrueCar Racing were in the house to support Legge, but her crew was standard-issue Indy — all male.
Not that Legge needs stunt casting in her pit to be noteworthy. She’s only the ninth woman to run Indy, and there were three other women in the field. Legge managed to move up eight places during the race, despite running an engine she wasn’t familiar with. She proudly wore the Girl Scouts badge on her helmet, since she was a U.K. Girl Guide herself, and she’s the new STEM ambassador for the scouts.
